Like a Vulcan ship de-cloaking, the money system descends mercilessly for its last raid on the shrieking planet. With no more need to stay concealed, the real game is now being played out in the open. It’s just a frenzy of last-chance smashing and grabbing with no pretense of honesty or fair play (which always were nothing more than pretense). Vole qui peut! They told us not to worry. Work hard, stay in debt (but not too much), buy whatever you want, ask no questions. And we believed that they were playing the same game. But their instructions to us, the things they made possible and desirable, were only a way to keep us hooked. We were never more than a source of wealth and a dumping-ground for assets sucked dry.

And now when we phone no one picks up. It rings and rings and doesn’t even go through to voicemail. When we empty the bath bubbles of sewer gas come up from the toilet. Our condo is infested with maggots and flies like you wouldn’t believe. The unit upstairs and the one upstairs from that one are both empty, and our heating bill is insane. Pipes burst and destroyed our kitchen. Half the units are in foreclosure.

This what we get for playing by the rules. Meanwhile, of the ones who wrought this havoc by destroying faith and decency, few will be punished. We’ll move on, unwilling to look to the past. Everything will have gone a little greyer, a little more hope driven out of the things we once cared for. Take the material comforts away from a spiritually empty world, and there is close to nothing. Shopping has become like hell. TV only lies. What can we turn to now? Religion? Revolution? Reaction?

Someone will tell us what to do.
